Cistus, also known as Cistus, belongs to the semi diurnal flowering family and is a perennial upright sub shrub. It grows between shrubs and rock walls along the Mediterranean coast in Spain and Greece, with low yields. Its thick leaves secrete fragrant and viscous resin, and it blooms with white flowers. Rock rose essential oil is extracted from its branches and leaves through distillation process. It is a bright yellow transparent liquid with a rich and fragrant aroma, similar to the deep and mellow taste of ambergris. It is warm and has a "penetrating power", with a woody or smoky flavor, and has a long-lasting fragrance.
