Geranium is native to southern Africa and belongs to the perennial shrub family of geraniums. It grows in warm temperate climates and prefers light. Its leaves are emerald green and slightly furry, and its flowers are brightly colored. The color of different varieties varies greatly. Geranium is known as the "common rose", with over 200 varieties available. However, only a few varieties can be used for extracting essential oils, such as Bourbon geranium, and the aroma of geranium essential oil may vary depending on the place of origin.
