It is mostly cultivated in high mountain areas above 2500 meters above sea level. The roots of Costus can be used as medicine and are also one of the commonly used and important traditional Chinese medicines. Generally, people will dig up the roots of Costus in autumn and winter, remove impurities, and then cut them into sections.
The Costus essential oil is extracted from the dry rhizome. It is a reddish brown viscous liquid. It smells of strong herbal fragrance, and has a damp soil or old musty taste.
